John Endler Collection

The FRRS was contacted by Bob Wise, Deaccession Chairman of the the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society on 4/26/2022.

The ARHS was founded in 1975, and its membership is composed of those interested in the history of the Jersey Central, Delaware Lackawanna & Western, Lehigh Valley, Lehigh & Hudson River, Lehigh & New England and the Reading Company., as well as their affiliated roads.

The ARHS received a collection of slides and negatives from deceased member John Endler, Jr. They removed the photos that relate to its lines of interest. Among the materials remaining are 46 Kodachrome Western Pacific slides taken by Mr Endler. The slides were taken on two trips on the eastbound California Zephyr, one in July 1953 and the other in July 1968. Almost half the photos are motive power. There is an interesting sequence of photos from the 1953 trip of a motive power change at Portola, CA. The balance of photos are scenery photos taken from either the dome or an open Dutch-door. You will note the second to last car in the train consist slide is a New York Central sleeper from the era of coast to coast train service.
