ORANGE EMPIRE RAILWAY MUSEUM/Southern California Railway Museum

OERM is a fine museum with many interesting pieces of equipment, primarily from the Pacific Electric and Los Angeles Railway, but also steam, diesel and electric equipment from lines all over California. Trolley and steam train rides are available. The museum is located at 2201 south "A" Street, Perris, just off Interstate 15E about 18 miles east of Riverside.
THE MORAGA PUBLIC LIBRARY, 1500 St. Mary's Road, Moraga, CA 94556, phone (925)-376-6852. The library hosts the Moraga Historical Society. Several O-scale diorama form their major display. There are also books, photos and mementos, largely from the collection of Brother Dennis, formerly of nearby St. Mary's College. The history room is open 1-3 P.M. Monday and Friday, or by appointment.
WESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD MUSEUM AT PORTOLA, P.O. 608, Portola, CA 96122, phone (916) 832-4131. Known holdings: SW-1 401, S-1 405, covered hopper 5005, boxcar 2346, caboose 1642, and GP-7 711. The Feather River Rail Society, which operates the museum, has concentrated on saving WP equipment, but owns many interesting first-generation diesels from all over northern California and Nevada, plus a fine collection of freight cars. The museum is famous for its locomotive rental program where visitors can actually operate selected engines. SACRAMENTO VALLEY HISTORICAL RAILWAYS
, 1120 Lincoln Avenue, Woodland, CA 95695. Known holdings: none. This organization currently does not maintain a museum. However, they have restored Southern Pacific 0-6-0 1233 which they operate in excursion service over the former SN Woodland Branch. Part of the ride is along the Sacramento River levee and also includes crossing the 8,000-foot Elkhorn Trestle near Woodland. The group is currently restoring the former SP depot in Woodland for use as a museum. SVHR web site displays a gallery of SN photos.

Known holdings: Birney streetcar 62, GE steeple cabs 652 and 654, box motor 602, Holman combine 1005, Hall Scott trailers 1019 and 1020, parlor car Bidwell, boxcar 2314, portable substation 1, GE 44-ton diesel 146, and caboose 1632. The museum has the largest collection of surviving SN equipment, some of it restored and operable. There is also steam, diesel and electric equipment from other lines throughout the west. Electric cars operate along several miles of the former SN mainline. There are also extensive holdings of photographs and paper materials, including the Vernon Sappers collection.
