About the Western Pacific Railroad Historical Society

The Western Pacific Railroad Historical Society is truly unique in the realm of railroad historical societies. The WPRRHS is more than a simple organization with an archive and web site that provides a magazine or newsletter. As a branch of our parent organization, the Feather River Rail Society (FRRS), the WPRRHS is all that and more.

The FRRS has worked tirelessly to form one of the largest and most complete collections in North America dedicated to telling the story of one railroad. The Western Pacific Railroad Museum - our public museum in Portola, California and home to over 150 pieces of full-size locomotives and rolling stock - is one of the largest and most cohesive collections in the United States and includes a wealth of historical equipment from the Western Pacific and its corporate family, which included the famous Sacramento Northern interurban railroad, the Tidewater Southern Railway and the Central California Traction Company.

The Western Pacific Railroad Historical Society manages the historic archives of the FRRS, organizes annual conventions, and publishes the quarterly glossy journal of the FRRS, The Headlight, as well as other publications.

Our Mission...

The Western Pacific Railroad Historical Society (WPRRHS) was formed with two primary goals:

1. The collection and preservation of documents, photographs, memorabilia, oral history and other artifacts of, and pertaining to, the history and operation of the railroad known as the Western Pacific Railroad and its subsidiaries, connecting short lines and related industrial railroad operations through the Arthur Walter Keddie Railroad Library located at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California.

2. The dissemination of said information through FRRS and WPRRHS publications, library services, historical seminars, conventions, guest lectures and FRRS/WPRRHS social functions and public events.
